Our Team
I joined MySight York almost 20 years ago and am proud to lead the team as Chief Executive.
Over the years I have helped to build robust financial systems which alongside successful fundraising campaigns, including our recent award of funding from the National Lottery Reaching Communities scheme, have helped to ensure the stability of the charity.
I am part of the working group, along with our ICB and RNIB partners, to fully embed the Eye Care Support Pathway across the region to give blind and partially sighted people access to non clinical advice and support while coming to terms with their sight loss.
We have a fantastic, hard-working and caring team here at MySight York and I am grateful to work with them every day.
Working within the Equipment and Information team, I can offer you time to explore how your sight changes impact your every day. Together we can understand how your sight is affecting the way you live and offer advice, training and demonstrate equipment to help you live with choice and independence. “To live well with sight loss”
Over many years working for MySight York, I have gained a wealth of experience and knowledge from the people I have met living successfully with sight loss. People have shared many ideas, skills & experience and this enables me to support you as you explore your own sight loss journey.
Away from work, along with family and friends, I like to travel, socialise & can often be found having a nice drink at the end of a long challenging walk!
Hello, I’m Helen, Eye Care Liaison Officer (ECLO) supporting patients at York Hospital Eye Clinic on behalf of MySight York. Since joining the charity in 2021, I have provided practical and emotional support to people experiencing sight loss, helping them navigate their eye care journey with confidence.
Originally from Liverpool, I previously spent 22 years working in self-advocacy services for people with learning disabilities across Merseyside, helping individuals find their voice and achieve greater independence.
I’m passionate about empowering people and making a positive difference, and I feel privileged to continue that work in my current role. I enjoy meeting different people each day and making a positive difference when they need it most. Outside of work, I enjoy going to the pub quiz and sitting in my garden enjoying the sunshine.
Hi, I’m Bex, I have been a service user of MySight York for over 12 years and part of the staff team since June 2024.
I am a Sight Support Advisor with a specialism in digital technology. Part of my role is to support delivery of MySight Yorks Digital Vision Project which has been funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. I also deliver 1:1 appointments within our Equipment and Information center alongside my colleague.
I chair MySight York’s Esme’s Friends group, a support group for members who experience visual hallucinations, otherwise known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS).
Sharing my lived experience and knowledge to support others with sight loss is such a rewarding and reciprocal role.
I am the Special Projects Lead at MySight York, where I work alongside people with sight loss to help create a more inclusive and accessible community. Since joining the organisation in 2021, I have led projects focused on participation, accessibility, and digital inclusion, including a current National Lottery, Community Fund project that is helping to bridge the digital divide for people with sight loss.
With over 20 years’ experience supporting children and young people with vision impairment and their families, I have worked across local, national, and European initiatives. I am the founder of Views International www.viewsinternational.eu/ and have advised the European Blind Union, Youth Forum. During my time at MySight York, I have contributed to award-winning projects, including the Visionary Children’s and Young People’s Award 2023 for the Sensory Storytelling Project and the Visionary’s Accelerating Impact Award 2025.
I work closely with members, volunteers and partner organisations to create engaging activities and opportunities for people living with sight loss in York. One of the things I enjoy most about my role is meeting new people and seeing the positive impact that connection, support and shared experiences can have on wellbeing and confidence.
I’m also passionate about social media accessibility and manage our social media channels, helping to ensure our content is as inclusive and accessible as possible.
Outside of work, I love spending quality time with my husband, whether that’s enjoying days out together, discovering new restaurants or gaming. I’m also kept company by my two cats, who are never far away!
Building meaningful connections with people has always been at the heart of my working life and experiences of being a volunteer in the York community.
I recognise the enormous impact that volunteers make each day and check in regularly to make sure that everyone knows their role well and feels not only well supported but appreciated too. I really enjoy chatting to clients and find setting up befriending matches really rewarding.
As well as being a Volunteer Coordinator, I am an artist who has produced artwork and facilitated creative workshops for NHS York Hospital. I am constantly inspired by the vibrant community I live in and the ancient city that surrounds us. My art is very brightly coloured, whimsical and stuffed full of strange blooms, seed shapes, happy people and birds. They say that “there will always be flowers for those who plant the seeds” and those are words that I live by in work and life.
Hello! I’m Will, and I’m responsible for all things fundraising, from bids to major funding bodies to managing our network of Pink Elephant collection boxes. I’m from York originally, returning a few years ago to support my grandmother through her journey with sight loss. MySight York’s mission is therefore very close to my heart.
My approach to fundraising is rooted in trust, transparency, and building mutually beneficial relationships. I’ve worked with more than 40 UK charities over 17 years, primarily as a philanthropy consultant and at the University of Cambridge. I’m a scientist at heart, and I’m naturally interested by data and processes that keep our fundraising activity running smoothly.
My overriding priority is to diversify and strengthen MySight York’s funding streams, securing our long-term prosperity and that of our community. It is a privilege to work alongside our members, friends, and funders to build that future together.
Governance
Hello everyone, I’m Andrea and I’m proud to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees at MySight York. I joined the Board in 2023, drawn by the charity’s deep roots in the community and its commitment to empowering people with sight loss. I believe strongly in the power of inclusion and accessibility and I wanted to contribute my skills and experience to an organisation that shares those values.
My background spans both the commercial and third sectors. I spent many years in senior fundraising and leadership roles at RNIB, where I led national and international programmes, including the sector’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. I’ve also worked in strategy, performance and stakeholder engagement, and I’m passionate about inclusive innovation and social impact.
For me, being a trustee is about giving back with purpose, supporting an organisation that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives and helping to build a more inclusive future for all. So, I’m excited to continue contributing to the future of MySight York and to ensure we remain responsive, resilient and rooted in the needs of our community.
Hi, I am Annette Gamston and I have been a trustee of MySight York since 2019. I am a Yorkshire lass, born in Ripon and, having lived all over the country, find myself back in glorious Yorkshire with my partner, his son and Jennie the cat. As a project manager who has worked across multiple industries, I am lucky enough to have had some great roles and it feels right to give back. I wanted to work with a local charity and, as I have family members with eyesight challenges, MySight seemed the ideal fit.
I enjoy spending time with likeminded people in support of MySight and helping MySight to run effectively so that the staff team can get on and deliver what they do so brilliantly. Away from MySight, I am still a freelance project manager. Family wise, we are often outside, cycling, walking, camping, gardening etc. Indoors, we all love reading, films, cooking and a bit of DIY on our old house.
I was a Trustee, Vice Chairman and a befriender of MySight York (known as YBPSS) for many years until 2009 when I retired and moved to South Northamptonshire to be nearer my children and grandchildren.
I continued with trusteeships of a number of charities down here and found that one of the benefits of the Covid Pandemic was that organisations could still operate effectively by having remote meetings, e.g. by Zoom.
Having maintained my contact with MySight York over the years this seemed like an ideal opportunity to formally support it again, albeit from 160 miles away, by attending meetings remotely.
After due consideration the Board agreed and here I am again!
I have lived in York 20 years now and my day job is managing a compliance team for a charity involved in the training industry. I hope my knowledge and experience will contribute to helping the board in leading the organisation and ensuring good governance.
Since I joined the board of trustees, both my parents have been diagnosed with medical conditions which affect their eyesight. This means my contribution to MySight has a much more personal relevance to me that it did when I first volunteered.
Hello, I’m Beth and I joined MySight York as a Trustee in January 2025. I am an environmental researcher and project manager who believes in designing a word where people and nature can live well.
I joined the board because I believe in MySight York’s mission. As someone who has lived with uveitis and glaucoma, I understand first-hand some of the challenges of navigating healthcare, accessibility, and everyday life with sight loss. I hope to use this lived experience to help ensure MySight York continues to be truly responsive to our community’s needs.
Outside of trustee work, I love being active and outdoors whenever I can, whether that’s working on my allotment, walking, or practicing yoga. I’m excited to support MySight York’s future and play a part in making a difference for others living with sight loss.
Hi, I’m Lisa and I joined MySight York as a Trustee in May 2024. I moved to York as a student, and loved it so much I’ve never left! I’ve worked in Adult Social Care for over 30 years, as a social worker and then in management roles. I’m passionate about enabling people to live their lives the way they want, as independently as possible.
I really enjoy being a MySight York Trustee because it gives me a way to use my skills and knowledge to help make a difference for others in my local area – as well as giving me the opportunity to learn from others experiences. I also love spending time with my family, playing board games and talking about all things Disney!
Hello, I’m Iain Mitchell. I moved to York in 2021 during the pandemic to help establish a network of Sight Loss Councils across Yorkshire, giving visually impaired people a stronger voice in their local communities. Visually impaired since birth, I’m now registered as severely sight impaired. This has never stopped me from living the life I choose or recognising the importance of independence and accessibility for all.
I was delighted to join the MySight York Board of Trustees at the start of 2024, having seen first-hand the vital role the organisation plays in supporting people living with sight loss across the city. Professionally, I work in the sight loss sector as a Senior Engagement Manager, where I’m passionate about creating a fairer society that enables blind and partially sighted people to access goods, services, and opportunities on an equal basis. I bring my lived experience and professional perspective to ensure the Board’s decisions reflect the needs and voices of people with sight loss.
Outside of work, I enjoy going to the theatre and walking my dog, Blue, who is a rescue dog from the Dog’s Trust. I’m also an avid Liverpool fan and a proud season ticket holder – YNWA.
Hello! I’m Chris, an arts leader who cares deeply about creating experiences where people feel welcome, represented and able to get involved. As Operations Manager at the National Centre for Early Music in York, I oversee venue activities, audience experience and the day‑to‑day running of the organisation, with a big focus on accessibility, inclusion and thoughtful design.
I’m also Treasurer and Trustee of Leeds Baroque Choir and Orchestra (where I play the harpsichord and chamber organ), and I coordinate volunteers for the York Health and Arts Mela. My background spans the arts, heritage and charity sectors, and I’m especially passionate about community‑focused work, good financial practice and supporting volunteers.
Hello, I’m Joey and I joined MySight York as a trustee in July 2026.
I moved to the UK from Canada in 2022, and to York in 2024. I’ve been visually impaired since birth, and a combination of willpower and lifelong support from organisations such as MySight York have enabled me to successfully live an independent life. I joined the Board to support and promote the important work the organisation does in facilitating independence amongst others like myself. My goal is to ensure that the organisation’s work continues to reflect the needs of an increasingly diverse community of people with sight loss in York.
My day job is in government policy delivery, and outside of work I am a huge foodie, enjoy attending movies and theatre, and exploring the world.
Hi, I’m Ebony and I’m a Trustee and Finance Lead at MySight York. I work in finance so help to support organisations in understanding and manage their money and resources efficiently.
MySight York’s work supporting people with sight loss is personal to me and incredibly important, and I’m excited about the opportunity to combine my experience in finance with the charity’s work. I enjoy being part of a group of people who are all bringing different skills and perspectives to the same goal.
I’m a graduate of the University of Sheffield with my degree being in History so naturally I’m an avid reader! I’m also a huge sports fan and I enjoy travelling and getting involved in my local community.
