Our Impact

What we do

MySight York supports people living with sight loss across York and the surrounding areas to live independently, stay connected, and make informed choices about their lives.

Some come to us after a recent diagnosis, while others have been living with sight loss for many years. Whatever stage you are experiencing, we are here to provide practical information, emotional support, opportunities to connect with others, and access to services that make everyday life easier.

What we do:

  • Provide practical advice and information about living with sight loss
  • Offer counselling and peer support opportunities for people with sight loss and those closest to them
  • Support people’s independence through access to technology and equipment
  • Deliver activities, groups, and services that reduce isolation and improve well-being
  • Partner with health, social care, and community groups to connect people with the right support
  • Raise awareness of sight loss and advocate for greater accessibility across our community

What we don’t do:

  • We don’t diagnose sight loss or provide medical treatment
  • We don’t replace advice from eye health professionals or social care teams
  • We don’t assess your eligibility for benefits or other services

Who we support

Our services are available to people at different stages of their sight loss journey, as well as those closest to them.

We work with healthcare professionals, volunteers, community organisations, and supporters who help us reach more people across York.

How our work is funded

MySight York is an independent local charity. Our work is funded through a combination of grants, contracts, charitable trusts, donations, fundraising activities, and support from our local community.

While some of our services receive funding from public bodies and grant-making organisations, it is often restricted to specific projects or activities. The funding does not cover everything we do, nor does it always reflect the growing need for support from people living with sight loss across York and the surrounding areas.

Community support helps us bridge that gap. It enables us to respond when people need us most: developing new services, providing accessible information, and continuing to offer some of our activities free of charge. Every donation, volunteer hour, fundraising event, and partnership helps ensure that people living with sight loss can access practical advice, emotional support, and opportunities to remain active in their community.
